Windows 11: What We Can Learn From Microsoft

Microsoft released Windows 11 officially a week ago. We’ve had an opportunity here to play around with it, and we have some food for thought for you.

1. Windows More Like Mac?

Windows 11 went with rounded corners, abstract art for the default wallpaper and a centered task bar. These have been signature design features of MacOS.

Q. Is this a result of the natural process of evolutionary convergence? Or did Microsoft just copy Apple?

2. Bye Bye Cortana!

Microsoft’s personal assistant Cortana was installed by default on Windows 10. This was a huge annoyance for many users, and many of those users voiced their concerns.
With Windows 11, Cortana is included but not installed by default.

Q. Did Microsoft finally realize Cortana is a mediocre assistant at best, compared to Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, and have relinquished this app in shame?

3. More Steps, More Better?

Did you want to copy/cut a file by right clicking? Or send a file to the desktop as a shortcut? You still can do this with Windows 11, but now when you right click, you would have to navigate to the bottom of the prettier right click menu and click on See More Options to access those features. Basically, it is an extra step, each time.

Q. Do you think this 2 step approach is cleaner? or just classical Microsoft nonsense?

4. Security or Planned Obsolescence?

Windows 11 requires a hardware feature from the motherboard called TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0, which allows for generating and storing encryption keys. That means with BitLocker installed, even if somebody steals your computer, they cannot access your files. Without this, one can simply boot into another operating system, let’s say Linux and they can bypass Windows authentication and access your files directly.

However, this makes numerous older computers prior to 2016 impossible to upgrade to Windows 11, without purchasing a new motherboard with TPM or a TPM PCIe expansion card.

Q. Is this a push for security, or simply a way to displace older PCs so consumers need to purchase newer hardware?

5. New Powerful Terminal, or Just Polishing a Turd?

At glance, Windows 11 comes with a beautiful new Windows Terminal for IT professionals, power users and enthusiasts. We use terminal or CLI (command line interfaces) every day to manage our cloud infrastructure via Linux secure shell.

However, when we dove into Windows Terminal, we noticed it lacks many of the commands and support that Linux and Mac Terminals have. In fact, all of the commands seem to be equivalent to Microsoft’s PowerShell (the more powerful, blue version of Command Prompt). We put it to the test and disabled PowerShell, and sure enough, Windows Terminal stopped working.

Essentially, Windows Terminal is just a theme on top of PowerShell.

Q. Would you consider this Microsoft innovation, or just a gimmick?

Our Verdict

1. We like the new UI but it definitely comes off as MacOS inspired.

2. We did not use Cortana, so we’re happy they removed it from being installed by default. And for people that use Cortana, they can enable it.

3. We are not a fan of extra steps to getting the job done. That is why with PR Distribution™, we make the process as easy as possible to order a PR, with transparent pricing, no sales reps, many payment choices including cryptocurrency, etc.

4. We at PR Distribution™ take security very seriously, especially when it comes to our customers’ information. This is why we do like the TPM 2.0 requirement. However, we also believe in freedom of choice for customers, so in our ideal world, it would be great if there was an option to let users bypass this requirement with a warning alert that informs the user of the risks associated with not having TPM.

5. While we prefer the Linux and MacOS Terminals much more, we do like Windows Terminal over PowerShell, even though it is the same under the hood.
