Sacramento Plastic Surgeon Answers FAQs About Breast Augmentation and Implant Safety

06/30/2020 08:00 - United States, California, Sacramento - (PR Distribution™)

Dr. Charles Perry, the Medical Director of Chrysalis Cosmetics, discusses the breast augmentation procedure and answers common questions about implant safety, candidacy, and the recovery process.

Sacramento, CA – A recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveals that breast augmentation continues to be the most popular surgery for aesthetic enhancement in the U.S. According to the ASPS, there were approximately 313,000 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2018, which is 4% higher than the number of times the treatment was performed in 2017. Dr. Charles Perry, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Sacramento, says the popularity of this particular procedure is reflected at his own practice, and it’s important for individuals considering breast enlargement to have a thorough understanding of what the treatment and recovery process entails, as well as precise information regarding breast implant safety and what they can expect from the results.

In the last year, Dr. Perry explains, one of the most frequently asked questions regarding breast augmentation that he receives is about the general safety of breast implants. Last year, news about a very rare form of cancer and its possible relationship to particular types of breast implants led to a recall of specific kinds of textured breast implant models. The recall occurred after research studies showed that there were possible links between certain kinds of breast implants with a textured surface to a cancer of the immune system now known as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Dr. Perry says this news understandably unsettled many individuals who have breast implants; however, he notes that the very low number of reported BIA-ALCL cases across the globe is indicative of the extreme rarity of the condition. He also notes that, as of October of last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not recommended that patients who currently have textured-surface breast implants undergo a breast implant removal procedure if they are not exhibiting symptoms of the BIA-ALCL condition. With all of that in mind, Dr. Perry maintains that women with any concerns whatsoever about their breast implants should have those concerns heard by their doctor and take appropriate steps based on the patient’s wishes.

Dr. Perry reveals that another common question he finds patients asking about breast augmentation involves the overall candidacy requirements for the procedure. Specifically, many individuals are unsure whether they are “too old” to have breast implants placed. Dr. Perry says that, in most cases, the answer is no. In fact, age is often very low on the list of factors that determine whether or not one is a good candidate for breast augmentation. Dr. Perry notes that the patient’s general health and their level of risk potential when undergoing a surgical procedure, as well as their specific expectations for the results of breast augmentation, are the most important things to evaluate when determining whether the procedure is right for their needs. In his experience, Dr. Perry has successfully performed breast implant procedures for patients across a wide age spectrum and many of his patients have been in upper age brackets.

Once patients decide to move forward with the breast augmentation procedure, they can select the type, size, and shape of their breast implants during the initial consultation. Dr. Perry then formulates the customized breast augmentation treatment plan and details what patients can expect. He also thoroughly explains the recovery process so patients can make an early plan. Breast augmentation typically does not require an overnight hospital stay, so he advises patients to be sure to have a loved one available to drive them home after surgery. While the particulars of recovery are somewhat different for each patient, Dr. Perry tells his patients that all individuals who undergo breast augmentation surgery can expect normal side effects such as swelling and soreness to be present as the breasts heal. He finds that most patients are able to return to their normal daily routines after approximately one week; however, restrictions in terms of strenuous exercise or other activities will be in place for several weeks.

Dr. Perry says one of the most important aspects of breast augmentation is that patients seek the advice of an extensively qualified and experienced plastic surgeon who truly listens to their concerns and is forthright about their options. He notes that a customized treatment plan, thorough attentiveness to the patient’s needs and goals, and the use of advanced techniques are all critical steps toward creating breast augmentation results that look both beautiful and natural.
