LEVELAND, OH.— Paulo, North America’s largest privately-held commercial heat treater, held an open house at its Cleveland division on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 to unveil its new hot isostatic pressing (HIP) capabilities. Customers from the aerospace, power generation, and agriculture industries joined company employees and other thermal processing leaders to see the new HIP vessel in action.
Paulo is offering its new hot isostatic pressing processing via its Quintus model QIH-122 Hot Isostatic Press, which can combine HIP with heat treating to reduce processing time and material handling requirements. With a 26-inch diameter and a 68.9-inch height, the HIP vessel can reach temperatures of over 2,550 degrees Fahrenheit and pressures up to 30,000psi.
Paulo added a 30,000 sq ft. expansion to its already sprawling Cleveland campus to house the HIP vessel. The space also allows room for future growth, as the company continues to invest in its equipment and capabilities to remain at the forefront of thermal processing technology.
Due to the increasing prevalence of additive manufacturing and metal injection molding, the need for hot isostatic pressing in the marketplace is growing. The advantage of HIP for parts manufactured using these methods is that the combined influences of heat and pressure close pores or voids within the parts, increasing mechanical performance, in addition to other effects.
At the open house event, Derek Denlinger, lead metallurgist for Paulo, performed several demonstrations showing the capabilities of the new HIP vessel. Dr. Johan Hjärne, Americas Business Unit Director at Quintus Technologies spoke at the unveiling. Ben Rassieur, Paulo company president, also offered his remarks about how the new HIP capabilities are advancing his future vision for Paulo and the industry.
