Amy Stouffer is an Iowa mom who has loved to draw her whole life – and she’s good at it. Now this mom of two is sharing her talent with other families who want to give their kids simple, positive, creative activities.
In addition to getting a weekly free coloring sheet, visitors to the site submit a form with information about their young artist, including name and interests, and the “Custom Coloring Mom” will turn it into a downloadable coloring sheet for a small fee. Better still, the recipient gets a video, where they can see their blank sheet of paper become the drawing that they’ll be able to print and color as many times as they like.
“My kids love to be outside and we try to be as active as possible,” says Stouffer. “But like all families, sometimes we need a quiet, indoor activity. We allow some screen time for our kids, but we want to limit it and give them good ways to develop fine motor skills, creativity and imagination.”
The Custom Coloring Sheets are a perfect marriage of the two. While creating each illustration, Stouffer speaks to the child directly in a personal video, giving them positive words of affirmation.
“Being able to print the coloring sheet or poster and then color the same image over and over again might seem strange to an adult, but it’s not boring to kids,” says Stouffer. “Kids learn through repetition. I’ve noticed that my kids like to read the same book, sing the same song, or see the same video over and over, as opposed to wanting a new one each time. Repetition is part of their development, so letting them color a picture more than once seems to help them learn.”
