NATIONAL STUTTERING ASSOCIATION GETS MOVING

09/11/2018 06:00 - DALLAS, TX - (PR Distribution™)

The ‘Don’t Tell Me to Slow Down’ 5K Run/Walk Returns to Texas

(DALLAS, TX) - The National Stuttering Association, a non-profit dedicated to bringing hope and empowerment to children and adults who stutter, is hosting a 5K run/walk Saturday, October 6 from 8:00 to 10:30AM. The aptly named, “Don’t Tell Me to Slow Down” run will be held at Bachman Lake Park and will also include a kids’ dash. The event brings together families and people of all ages and all fitness levels in support of the NSA’s Scholarship Fund, which helps individuals and families with financial difficulties attend the NSA’s annual conference. Early registration is encouraged online through October 4 at https://event.racereach.com/nsa-dallas5k-familyfunrun. Registration will also be available on the day of the event. The fee is $30 per person.

Running and fitness enthusiasts, college students, companies looking for a team-building exercise, and all NSA supporters are invited to participate or attend the event to raise funds. “Our goal is for anyone in our stuttering community who wants to attend our annual conferences to have the ability to do so, without having a financial barrier keeping them from attending, said Executive Director Tammy Flores. “It’s really important for us all to get together in person when we can.”
The 3.1-mile course is good for all skill levels. An awards ceremony will follow the run/walk, where everyone will receive a swag bag, race T-shirt and runners medal. Participants are encouraged to form teams to encourage each other throughout the run/walk. You do not have to live in the Dallas area to participate.

Stuttering is defined as a communication disorder involving disruptions, or “disfluencies,” in a person’s speech, affecting over 3 million American adults. The National Stuttering Association, originally named the National Stuttering Project, was founded in California by Bob Goldman and Michael Sugarman in 1977.

Texas has sixteen NSA chapters. Four chapters represent the Dallas area, including Dallas/Richardson NSA Kids ages 7-12 and Dallas/Richardson TWST ages 13-18. There are over 180 local support group chapters nationwide. The run/walk is to be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 8:00AM-10:30AM at Bachman Lake Park, 3500 Northwest Hwy. Dallas, Texas 75201. Onsite registration and packet pickup begin at 6:45AM. Participants can register at WeStutter.org. Price is $30 per person.
