Dr. Giulio Tarro, M.D., Ph.D., Chief, Division of Virology and President of the Ethic Committee for D. Cotugno Hospital for infectious Diseases, was just recently selected for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members are selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award. These special honorees are distinguished based on their longevity in their fields, their contributions they have made to society and the impact they had on their industries. Dr. Tarro is being recognized for this distinction for having over 5 decades of professional experience as a seasoned and trusted Clinical Professor, Scientist, and as a Lieutenant Colonel for the Italian Navy. Dr. Tarro has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. As a dynamic results-driven leader he has demonstrated success not only as a Virologist, but in all of his prior positions. His impressive repertoire of prior roles have included Research Associate for the Division of Virology and Cancer Research for the Children’s Hospital Research Foundation, Assistant Professor of Research Pediatrics, for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Research Chief for Italy National Research Council Fellow, Professor of Oncologic Virology for the University of Naples, Project Director for the National Cancer Institute, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the School of Specialization in Medical Nephrology for the University of Naples, Senior Scientist for Frederick Cancer Research Center, Adjunct Professor for the Department of Biology, Center for Biotechnology College of Science and Technology for Temple University. His areas of expertise include Murine Virology, Antiviral Chemotherapy, Effects of inhibitors on viral replication, studies on the role of herpesviruses in cancer, Tumor immunology and Pathology of AIDS.
Dr. Tarro earned his Medical Degree and received his diploma of Specialist in Nervous and Mental Diseases, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Naples. In 1971 he Completed his Professorship in Virology in Rome. The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami stated that “Choosing Dr. Tarro for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Tarro has been active in his community and recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the field of Virology. He has received many awards, accolades and has been featured in numerous publications multiple years in a row such as Marquis Who’s Who, Who’s Who in Italy, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Grand Ambassadors of Achievement International, International Who’s Who of Intellectuals, Who’s Who in European Research and Development, The Barons 500 Who’s Who: Leaders for the New Century, Five Thousand Personalities of the World, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in the World. For 2019, Dr. Tarro is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). For 2018 he was selected as Top Virologist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) and recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012 he received the International Prize Le Muse Florence, the AAAS Member Royal House Aranan Gold Medal and in 2011 recipient of the International Peace Award and Global Education Sanremo Award. In 2010 Dr. Tarro received the National Award for solidarity by Fratres St. Giovanni La Punta and in 2009 the Lifetime Achievement Award by Sbarro Health Research Organization. In 1987 he received the First Prize in Biomedical Research from the Italian Academy of Arts and Sciences just to name a few.
Aside from his successful career, Dr. Tarro is also a sought after lecturer, speaker, holds over 17 patents, and he is a published author. He has authored and co-authored more than 500 articles in professional journals and chapters in books. Dr. Tarro has held numerous leadership roles with professional organizations, including Life President of the Teresa and Luigi de Beaumont Bonelli Foundation for Cancer Research, Scientific Coordinator of Extracorporeal Hyperthermia in HCV Patients, President of Campania Technology and Ecology Center, Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Sceintific Advisory Board of Unihart Biotech Pharma, Member of the Ethics Committee of Basilicata Oncologic Hospital, Chairman Committee on Biotechnologies and VirusSphrere, World Academy of Biomedical Technologies.
Looking back, Dr. Tarro attributes his success to his experience, education, mentors he has had along the way and staying passionate in all his endeavors. Dr. Tarro says he has been blessed, he loves doing what he is doing, and feels this is just the beginning. When he is not working he enjoys spending time with his family and traveling. For the future Dr. Tarro hopes to continue to make a difference in people’s lives anyway that he can.
