Dr. Bruce Hapke selected as Top Scientist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Bruce W. Hapke, PhD, Professor Emeritus for the University of Pittsburgh has just recently been selected as Top Scientist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the Geology and Planetary Science profession.  

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field and other affiliations and contributions to their communities.  All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements. www.iaotp.com/award-gala 

With over 5 decades of professional experience as a noted American Planetary Scientist and Educator, Dr. Hapke has certainly proven himself as an expert in the field. He has been described by some as one of the fathers of planetary remote sensing.As a dynamic, results-driven leader, Dr. Hapke has demonstrated success not only as a Professor for the University of Pittsburgh, but has demonstrated success in all his past positions.His impressive repertoire of prior roles and accomplishments include, Senior Research Associate for Cornell University Center for Radiophysics and Space Research.Dr. Hapke took part in Mariner 10, Viking and Apollo Missions. He is a past Chairman of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society and Professor in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at the University of Pittsburgh.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hapke has received many awards and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.For 2019, he is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional Magazine), and is also being considered for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award. For 2018 he was selected as Top Scientist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals.For 2017 he was recognized by Marquis Who’s Who as an industry leader in Education/ Life Sciences and recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award. He has appeared in the pages of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.Dr. Hapke was awarded the Kuiper Prize in 2001 which is the most distinguished award given by the American Astronomical Society’s Division for Planetary Sciences.Hapkeite, a recently discovered lunar mineral was named in his honor and he is the eponym of Asteroid #3549 Hapke. Dr. Hapke is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and is affiliated with organizations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the International Astronomical Union.

Aside from his successful career, Dr. Hapke contributed numerous articles to scholarly journals and wrote “Theory of Reflectance and Emittance Spectroscopy,” which has been described by some readers as the single best reference for radiative transfer in remote sensing. 

Dr. Hapke earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1953 in Physics.He was awarded his Ph.D in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 1962.Stephanie Cirami, President of IAOTP stated, “Choosing Dr. Hapke for this honor was an easy decision for our panel to make.
