Dr. Brian Lima selected as Top Doctor of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Brian Lima, MD, FACS, Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation for North Shore University Hospital, Professor for the Center for Immunology and Inflammation at the Feinstein Institute and Associate Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, was recently selected as Top Doctor of the Year for 2020 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment to the healthcare profession.

With having over twenty years of professional experience as a renowned cardiac surgeon, Dr. Lima has certainly proven himself as an extraordinary professional and expert in the field.  Dr. Lima is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success in advanced heart failure, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support devices that are surgically implanted to help provide full heart support for people with advanced heart failure. Currently, he serves as the Director of Heart Transplantation at the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital, located at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island, part of the Northwell Health system. 

Dr. Lima’s impressive repertoire of past roles include Surgical Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX, where he helped develop one of the busiest surgical heart failure centers in the country. Dr. Lima was a pioneer in establishing the first and only full-service heart transplant program throughout Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. He continues to offer lifesaving opportunities to residents who otherwise would have to travel long distances for pre- and post-care and a lifetime of follow up.

Dr. Lima’s areas of surgical expertise and knowledge encompass heart transplantation as well as the entire spectrum of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass grafting, valvular repair/replacement, aortic surgery and the surgical management of heart failure with ventricular assist devices (LVADs) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). 

Dr. Lima graduated Magna Cum Laude in Chemistry from Cornell University and received his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine on a Dean’s Full Tuition Scholarship. He completed his residency in general surgery along with a cardiovascular research fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Lima concluded his heart surgery training at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Lima has received many awards, accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. This year he is being considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for a broadcast feature on the famous Reuters Building in Times Square, NYC. He will be honored at IAOTP’s 2020 Annual Awards Gala, being held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City for his selection as Top Doctor of the Year. In past years, Dr. Lima received the Dr. Charles H. Bryan Clinical Excellence Award in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. During medical school, Dr. Lima received the prestigious Stanley J. Sarnoff research fellowship award in cardiovascular sciences, which funded a year of investigation at the Transplantation Biology Research Center of the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Aside from his successful career, Dr. Lima remains actively engaged in several ongoing clinical research studies. He is a sought-after lecturer and has completed presentations on advanced heart failure care at numerous national and international conferences including the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation. Dr. Lima is very passionate about clinical innovation, research and education.
