Dr. Arthur L. Burnett, II, MD, MBA, FACS, Patrick C. Walsh Professor of Urology, Professor for the Oncology Center, Director for Basic Science Laboratory in Neurourology, Director for Sexual Medicine Fellowship Program, Faculty Member for Cellular and Molecular Medicine Graduate Training Program for Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, was selected as Doctor of the Decade for 2019 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).

With over three decades of professional experience in the Healthcare Field, Dr. Arthur Burnett has certainly proven himself as an extraordinary professional, and expert in the field. Dr. Burnett, is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success not only within Urology, Oncology, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, but his original discoveries of the nitric oxide biochemical mechanisms in erectile tissue, helped pave the way for the clinical development of oral medications to treat erectile dysfunction such as Viagra. He has also pioneered work to develop therapies to protect penile nerve function required for improved erectile function recovery after radical prostatectomy. Dr. Burnett commenced his medical career after graduating from Princeton University with his undergraduate degree in biology subsequently his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Burnett then completed his internship and residency in surgery while also completing residency and fellowship in urology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Upon completion of his urology residency, Dr. Burnett received an American Foundation of Urologic Disease New Investigator Award to continue research work into the regulatory mechanisms of penile erection and has maintained an active laboratory in neuro-urology since that time. Currently, Dr. Burnett holds professional appointments at the Johns Hopkins Hospital including Director of the Male Consultation Clinic and clinician-scientist at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute. Dr. Burnett’s key responsibilities and areas of expertise include prostate cancer; lower genitourinary tract malignancies (penile, scrotal and urethral cancers); lower genitourinary tract reconstruction (pelvic trauma and urethral stricture disease); erectile dysfunction and penile abnormalities (including Peyronie’s disease); and female urology (including urinary incontinence, urethral abnormalities, and prolapsed pelvic structures.)
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Burnett, has received numerous awards and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. For 2019 he graced the front cover of TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. For 2018, he was selected as Top Doctor of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals. His work has appeared in many prominent journals such as Science, Nature Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Urology, Urology, and Journal of Andrology. Dr. Burnett is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, member of the American Urological Association, Sexual Medicine Society of North America, International Society for Sexual Medicine, Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology, and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. He has also sat on various advisory committees including the Urology Study Section, National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review and FDA Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs.
Aside from his successful career, Dr. Burnett is also a lecturer, sought after speaker and frequent contributor to the medical press. He has written more than 350 original peer-reviewed articles, along with numerous additional articles, editorials, and book chapters, relating to his biomedical research and clinical activities. He has been recognized worldwide for being a world-authority figure in the science and medicine of male erectile dysfunction and he has performed over 3,000 radical prostatectomy surgeries.
Looking back, Dr. Burnett attributes his success to his integrity, mentors he has had along the way, his passion for what he does and from the loving support of his family. For the future he will continue to grow as a professional, and continue to improve lives anyway that he can.
