Hurricane Season Starts June 1: Assemble Supplies and Materials Ahead of the Season

Plywood, building materials, and portable electric generators sell out when hurricanes and tropical storms appear on the horizon. Purchasing building materials including plywood ahead of the season provides time to measure, cut, and predrill for quick installation when a hurricane threatens. Preparing a Home for a Hurricane prevents damage and helps keep the roof structure intact. Large openings such as garage doors and patio doors are vulnerable.

The annual campaign for Hurricane Preparedness begins on May 5th, just three weeks before the June 1 start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Every family needs a plan for a hurricane. Last minute shopping in the hours before a storm makes landfall reveals empty shelves, and that includes building materials.

Heart wrenching photos of families standing amidst the rubble of a home accompany news reports following a hurricane. Video footage from helicopters often shows houses flattened or gutted and irreplaceable treasured possessions added to heaps of debris, while homes boarded with 1/2-inch plywood and lag screws remained intact. A big part of every Hurricane Disaster Plan includes preparing a home ahead of the season and when a storm approaches.

From the time the National Hurricane Center issues the first Hurricane Watch to the Storm’s Arrival, residents within the watch area have just 48 hours to prepare. Orders to evacuate may come at the same time or within the next 12 hours. Without a Complete Hurricane Disaster Plan and a Disaster Supply Kit, homeowners won’t have time to buy and install building materials and do everything else necessary to prepare before the hurricane arrives.

Generators are another item in short supply just before a hurricane. Portable Generators for Emergency Power sell out and they need a supply of gasoline. When local gasoline supplies run short in the hours leading up to a hurricane and in the aftermath, fuel for portables becomes difficult to get. Standby Generators run on Natural Gas or Propane and provide a safe, automatic, permanent solution to power outages.

According to Ready.gov, plan for batteries and Other Power Alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out. Every household member should have a flashlight with extra batteries. Especially important: refrigerated food and medical supplies. Always operate camp stoves, charcoal grills and generators outdoors and follow all Safety Rules.
