On June 16th, Auctions at Showplace is honored to present the second of two auctions featuring items from the estate of celebrated actor, Miriam Colón. Born in Puerto Rico, Colón moved to New York in 1953 to attend the prestigious Actor’s Studio. In 2014, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama for her lifetime achievements and helping to cultivate opportunities for fellow Hispanic actors.

Complementing the Colón estate is a private collection from Park Avenue of Pre-Columbian gold artifacts. These objects, created nearly a half millennium ago demonstrate the skill and craftsmanship of early metalworkers. Ranging from jewelry to ritual objects, the collection includes a Tairona bird pendant, figural bell and seated warrior pin, A Sinu Tumbaga feline on crocodile finial, a Sinu anthropomorphic pendant, and a pair of Quimbaya Tairona ear ornaments with open scrollwork. Those interested in Pre-Columbian pottery will find hotly sought after examples from the Michoacan, Nayarit, Colima, Veracruz, Mayan and San Juanito cultures in addition to a Chancay Peruvian carved wood shaman figure.

Illuminating the sale is a selection of mid-century modern lighting fixtures including a pair of Paolo Venini and Carlo Scarpa “Diamante” table lamps that resemble double helix forms, a large mid-century modern Sputnik Murano glass chandelier, two George Kovacs chrome floor lamps, an Angelo Lelli for Arredoluce black enameled steel floor lamp, and a Sciolari 1970’s pendant chandelier.

Three sculptures by French artist, Sacha Sosno (1937-2013) all exemplify his signature style of deconstructing the human form. Works to be sold comprise his 1979 “Bust of a Young Girl,” and a pair of 1980 busts depicting a man and woman. Among paintings by hotly sought after artists are Continental city scenes by George H. Yewell and Boris Pastoukhoff, a seascape by Henry A. Duessel, landscapes by José Bardasano Baos and Samuel A. Weiss, and a selection of robust 20th century abstract compositions from the Estate of Colon.

Luxury timepieces are strongly represented by an 18K yellow gold Patek Phillipe Geneve men’s wristwatch, a Tiffany & Co. 18K yellow gold Omega watch, and two 14K yellow gold Hamilton rectangular watches. Generous offerings of sterling silver include a Georg Jensen “Cypress” flatware service for twelve with additional serving pieces, an impressive Felipe Perez hand hammered tripod bowl with repoussé eagles, a Taxco Mexican silver six-piece tea service including serving tray, and a Redlich & Co. oval tray with handsome flower and scroll decoration.
