Atlanta, GA -- November 24, 2020 - It is with heavy hearts and great sadness, that the Board of Directors of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. and members across our global network, extend condolences to the family of The Hon. David Dinkins

The Hon. David Dinkins was a founding member of the One Hundred Black Men, Inc. (NY Chapter). “The 100” began in 1963 in New York City as Dinkins, and other visionaries explored ways of improving conditions in their community. The goal was to ensure the future and sustainability of minority communities, by allocating an extensive amount of resources toward youth development.

I hope my life has helped provide young people encouragement and incentives to achieve their highest potential. I will always tell kids you’re as good as anybody and better than most.”

–David Dinkins, as quoted in the 100 Black Men’s Manning Up Book.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey on October 10, 1927, Dinkins graduated magna cum laude from Howard University with a degree in mathematics, later earning his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. After briefly practicing law in New York City, Dinkins began his ascent in politics.

In January 1990, David Dinkins was sworn in as the first African American mayor in New York City history. Dinkins also served as an elected delegate for the Hillary Clinton campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

Dinkins proved to be an inspiration to many, and a servant-leader. While dealing with the racial animosity that accompanied his title as the first black mayor in NYC, Dinkins remained compassionate, reliable, and motivated to make a difference.

Because his life was also dedicated to helping underserved communities, David Dinkins is greatly missed and being remembered by many across the country. Another giant has earned his rest and the men of the 100 salute you.
