Fresh Taiwan at NY NOW Summer 2019 Highlights Best of Taiwan Design

07/25/2019 09:00 - NEW YORK, NY - (PR Distribution™)

10 trailblazing Taiwan design brands exhibit as Fresh Taiwan at NY NOW Summer 2019 this August. The 10 brands purvey a wide variety of products, ranging from digital lomography cameras by PAPER SHOOT, to classic children’s toys by eguchi toys, leather fashion accessories by Kamaro’an and Studio Smoll, chic hi-fi systems by CELIA&PERAH, organic home decor by Yenchenyawen design studio, stationery and accessories by 22STUDIO and ystudio, and elegant tabletop items by Kanari and Mordeco. This is Fresh Taiwan’s fourth year at NY NOW, exhibiting in Level 3 / HOME: Accent on Design — 3712.

Fresh Taiwan launched in 2012, organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and executed by Taiwan Design Center, to elevate the profile of Taiwan’s design industry at international trade fairs. This year, Fresh Taiwan brandishes a new, highlighter pen-inspired logo, which universally communicates Fresh Taiwan’s mission; to highlight the best of Taiwan design around the globe. Year-on-year, Fresh Taiwan design brands continue to excel at NY NOW. This year, Studio Smoll has been nominated to take part in the ‘sustainability: design for a better world’ exhibition that gathers together environmentally-conscious and socially-responsible brands from around the world. Studio Smoll has also been shortlisted for the Eco Choice Awards. Last year, the Fresh Taiwan pavilion welcomed buyers from New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, Washington DC’s National Gallery of Art and National Building Museum, California’s SFMOMA and San Diego Museum of Art, the US’ biggest chain bookstore Barnes & Nobles, NYC-based online gift shop Uncommongoods, men’s shopping blog Cool Material, and German stationery brand Kaweco. This is Fresh Taiwan’s first international event in 2019, and later in the year it will head to Maison et Objet Paris and Style Bangkok Fair.

All 10 Fresh Taiwan design brands exhibiting at NY NOW Summer 2019 are material-led; each with their own unique style of Taiwanese minimalism. Almost all of their products are completely plastic-free, focusing instead on materials such as brass, concrete, Jesmonite, leather, and wood. What’s more, many of the brands enhance their product design with a fun twist of DIY, including modular cameras by PAPER SHOOT, the R series DIY Bluetooth Radio by CELIA&PERAH, and mix-and-match leather bags by Studio Smoll.

Brass

The latest product from PAPER SHOOT is the Jadeite cabbage camera, designed in partnership with Taiwan’s National Palace Museum. It joins the brand’s popular CROZ vintage camera series, which derives its vintage style from the brass frame and fastens that hold the camera together. This lomography brand leads a subculture of digital natives who desire less tech and more style.

ystudio is dedicated to sharing the beauty of words, writing, and stationery. The brand achieves this by crafting its pen collections from lavish materials such as brass, which lend them a luxurious look and feel. For example, the YAKIHAKU PEN was designed in collaboration with Japanese artisan Kohei Murata, using brass and Unry? foil, which is a rare material with a “Cloud Dragon” pattern.

Kanari crafts elegant clocks, lighting, and tabletop products from brass and copper. The brand’s latest offering is the CLOUD Tissue Box, which assumes the unique form of a three-dimensional trapezoid, inside a circular frame made from brass or copper. Its other products on display at NY NOW include the House bottle opener, Skelock clock, Cylight pendant lighting, and Twilight tea light holder.

Concrete

22STUDIO is inspired by the brutalist architecture of Taipei, and not just in terms of material, but also in terms of form. The brand’s fashion accessories include polygonal Concrete Jewelry (Rings) and the 4D Concrete Watch Automatic. Its brutalist stationery collection includes the Seven Ballpoint Pen, Merge Tape Handheld Dispenser, and the 4th Dimension Table Clock, which are all made from concrete.

Jesmonite

Jesmonite is the signature material of the Landscape of Oxidation fashion and tabletop collection by Yenchenyawen design studio. Their new products featured on the Fresh Taiwan booth include Ring holders and jewelry boxes. The brand is inspired by the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi, which cherishes damage and repair as part of an object's history rather than something to disguise.

Leather

Kamaro’an explores Taiwanese tribal culture and craftsmanship through minimalist design. The brand’s leather products, which include bags and purses, are handwoven by skilled, indigenous craftspeople on Taiwan’s east coast. Their latest product is a mirror with a handwoven leather frame that complements the brand’s collection of Woven Accessories and Umbrella Sedge lightings.

Studio Smoll designs eco-friendly leather bags that are completely free of toxic chemicals and adhesives. Their alternative assembly method is based on an ingenious folding technique, which is so simple that anyone can do it. The brand will showcase 5 of its DIY leather bags at NY NOW, including the new Nerdy Mini DIY Leather Backpack that comes in different colors so users can mix-and-match.

Wood

Favored for its natural acoustic properties, wood is the main material of CELIA&PERAH speakers. The brand’s products range from premium quality hi-fi systems, to portable and wireless bluetooth speakers that connect with devices such as smartphones or laptops. Its latest product is the R series DIY Bluetooth Radio, which is designed to offer audiophiles the experience of building their own audio device from scratch.

eguchi toys specializes in finely crafted wooden toys for little hands at the beginning of life. Born in Japan but residing in Taiwan, designer Kentaro Eguchi studied fine art and childhood education before founding his wooden toy brand. His bird-shaped hanging mobiles, puzzle games, and music boxes all aim to stimulate children’s imaginations, while allowing their dreams to flourish naturally.
