DR. BARRY BOEHM SELECTED AS TOP PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR BY THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TOP PROFESSIONALS (IAOTP)

Dr. Barry W. Boehm is the University of Southern California Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Astronautics; the TRW Professor of Software Engineering; and Founding Director of the USC Center for Systems and Software Engineering.  He is also the Chief Scientist of the DoD-Stevens-USC Systems Engineering Research Center, and a part-time employee of the Aerospace Corp. He was just recently selected as Top Professor of the Year for 2019 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment to the industry. 

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With having over 5 decades of professional experience as an Educator and Professional in Software and Computer Technology, Dr. Boehm has certainly proven himself as an extraordinary professional, and expert in the field.  Dr. Boehm is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success not only as Professor of Computer Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering and Astronautics, but in every position he has ever held.  His impressive repertoire of prior roles have included: Serving the US Department of Defense as Director of the DARPA Information Science and Technology Office, Director of the DDR&E Software and Computer Technology Office where he managed over $1 Billion of R&D efforts.  He worked at TRW as culminating Chief Scientist of the Defense Systems Group.  He was Head of the Information Sciences Department for the Rand Corporation and was a Programmer-Analyst at General Dynamics.  He is widely regarded for his contributions to the field including the Constructive Cost Model family of parametric estimation models, the Spiral Model of the Software Process, the Theory W approach to systems and software management and requirements determination, and the foundations for the areas of software risk management and software quality factor analysis.

While at USC, Dr. Boehm has served as the Principal Investigator on major research contracts and grants from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and has received industry research grants from over 25 industrial organizations.  His real-client software engineering project course has successfully completed over 200 projects for USC-neighborhood clients and educated over 2000 students in an integrated approach to systems engineering and software engineering. 

Dr. Boehm received his B.A. Degree from Harvard in 1957, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from UCLA in 1961 and 1964, all is Mathematics.  He has also received an honorary Sc.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts in 2000 and in Software Engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011.  Stephanie Cirami, President of IAOTP stated, “Choosing Dr. Boehm for this honor was an easy decision for our panel to make.  Dr. Boehm’s long list of accomplishments, awards and accolades are extremely impressed.He has tremendous foresight, extensive knowledge, is brilliant at what he does and was exactly what we were looking for.  We are truly honored to have him as our Top Professor of the Year and we are looking forward to meeting him at the gala.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Boehm has received numerous awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.  For 2019 he is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional Magazine), and is also being considered for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award.  He will be honored at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala being held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, NV for his selection as Top Professor of the Year. In 2013 he received the AIAA Software Systems Medal.  In 2011 he was the recipient of the Wayne Stevens Lifetime Achievement Award in Software Engineering.  In 2010, he received the IEEE Simon Ramo Medal in Systems Science and Engineering.For 2006 & 2007 Dr. Boehm received the Lifetime Achievement Symposium honoree in Software Engineering Education and Software Engineering.  Also in 2006 he received the Best Paper from the INCOSE Journal Systems Engineering. In 2000, Dr. Boehm received the IEEE Harlan D. Mills Award and in 1997 received the ACM Distinguished Research Award in Software Engineering. Among his other list of accomplishments include the J.D. Warnier Prize for Excellence in Information Sciences, the ISPA Freiman Award for Parametric Analysis, the NSIA Grace Murray Hopper Award, the Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence and the ASQC Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Boehm is also a Fellow of the primary professional societies in computing (ACM), aerospace, electronics, and systems engineering, and is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

Aside from his successful career, Dr. Boehm is a sought after lecturer, Speaker, and has published over 500 papers and books with over 58,000 citations and a Google Scholar h-index of 80.  He has served on the boards of several scientific journals and was invited as a Guest Lecturer of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He is founding Chair of the AIAA Technical Committee on Computer Systems, Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Software Engineering, and is a member of the Governing Board of the IEEE Computer Society.  He has also served as Chair of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board’s Information Technology Panel, Chair of the NASA Research and Technology Advisory Committee for Guidance, Control, and Information Processing, and Chair of the Board of Visitors for the CMU Software Engineering Institute.

Looking back, Dr. Boehm attributes his success to his education, mentors he has had along the way and staying passionate in all his endeavors.  He says he has been blessed, he loves doing what he is doing and feels this is just the beginning.  For the future, he hopes to continue to thrive as a journalist and inspire others to pursue a career in this field.
