CYNTHIA MABRY-KING SELECTED AS TOP MEDIATOR OF THE YEAR BY THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TOP PROFESSIONALS (IAOTP)

08/20/2019 22:59 - WASHINGTON, DC - (PR Distribution™)

Cynthia R. Mabry-King, Mediator, full-time Circuit Mediator for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the first African American to hold that position, was just recently selected as Top Mediator of the Year for 2019 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, other affiliations and contributions to their communities.  All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual awards gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements. www.iaotp.com/award-gala

With over 3 decades of professional experience in the Legal field, Mabry-King has certainly proven herself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. As a dynamic, results-driven leader, Mabry-King has demonstrated success not only as a Mediator, but in every position she has ever held.  Her impressive repertoire of prior roles have included: Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for Howard University School of Law, Professor of Law for Howard University School of Law which she taught Civil Procedure, Adoption Law, Family Law, Pretrial Litigation Practice, Complex Litigation and Appellate Advocacy. She was also the Director of Howard University Family Law Certificate Program. She also taught at Washington & Lee University School of Law and West Virginia College of Law.

Mabry-King served as a law clerk for the Honorable Anna Diggs Taylor (U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan) and for the Honorable Harriett Rosen Taylor (Superior Court of the District of Columbia where she mediated landlord and tenant cases for the Court). She practiced law at Crowell & Moring LLP, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (where, as an attorney, she negotiated settlements in many cases through mediation), and the Federal Railroad Administration (where she personally negotiated settlements regarding railroad company violations of federal regulations).

Mabry-King is widely known for facilitating settlement discussions in hundreds of complex disputes. She was a volunteer mediator for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia's Multi-Door Dispute Resolution, Family Division for thirteen years before she joined the Fourth Circuit. In 2005 and 2010, while she was a Professor of Law, she created and taught an international comparative law course on alternative dispute resolution processes at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa.

Mabry-King is a graduate of New York University’s Master of Laws program and a graduate of Howard University’s Juris Doctor program where she was Student Articles Editor of the Howard Law Journal. The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami, stated “Choosing Cynthia for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make.  She is brilliant at what she does and has contributed so much of her wisdom and passion to the legal industry.  She is humble, gracious and we felt she would make an amazing asset to our organization. We are looking forward to meeting her at the gala and know we will be seeing more amazing things from this incredible woman.”

Throughout her career Mabry-King has received awards and accolades and she has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to those she serves. For 2020 she is being considered for the Empowered Women of the Year Award and for 2019 she was selected as Top Mediator of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) and will be honored at their Annual Awards Gala at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. She is also being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. In 2015 she was the recipient of the Angel in Adoption Award presented by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Law School Admission Council, and the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award presented by the Board of Trustees.  For 2013 she made the Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll from the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. In 2010, she received the Warren Rosmarin Professor of Law Award of Excellence in Teaching and Service. She is a member of the Supreme Court of the United States Bar, the District of Columbia Bar Association, The Federal Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Section, the American Association’s Dispute Resolution Section, and the International Society of Family Law.

Mabry-King is a sought after lecturer and speaker. She frequently speaks at Continuing Legal Education seminars and lectures at law schools.  She has more than 170 hours of mediation training and has trained other mediators and law students. Her best-selling Adoption Law textbook has been cited favorably and widely by judges, legislators, lawyers and professors.

Looking back, Mabry-King attributes her success to her perseverance, mentors she has had along the way, and her passion for helping people.  Aside from her successful career Mabry-King is also an active member in her community with a special interest in serving seniors and children. When not working, she enjoys reading, traveling, playing the soprano saxophone that she won from Kenny G, and spending time with her family and close friends. For the future, she hopes to continue to make a difference in people’s lives anyway that she can.
