"Don't Underestimate Me" tells the story of an outcast imprisoned by society's belief system who, finding courage in his own perfection, manages to break free and fulfill his destiny, inspiring other humans to follow the light and free themselves from bondage.
Among the outcasts are transgenders, homosexuals, the handicapped, the obese, and people of color - all considered misfits, all outside the accepted “norms” of society. Dex's powerful message, augmented by a supernal angelic presence portrayed by Dawn Tallman, awakens them from their lethargy and transforms despair into hope and perfection.
As we learned from his short documentary, "Behind the Magic”, Dex grew up with more than his share of disparagement and oppression. "I remember being bullied and pushed around," he recalls, "It was terrifying. My soul was marginalized." But the support of the community and a powerful, spiritual awakening have led him to a better place, where love and self-realization have become the new norms.
Statistics from the Center for Disease Control show that in the United States, suicides are at a high rate and have increased by no less than 33% in the new millennium. Pooled data from 35 studies worldwide attests that LGBT youth are 3.5 times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Dex sees this as a result, in part, of a kind of "mass underestimation" and he is committed to counteracting it through his music.
After a private screening held in New York City for Dex and his team, the queen of gospel energy, Dawn Tallman stated, “I was moved to tears as I watched my own story being played out on the screen. Every single lyric and moment in the video tell a true story for me and I’m super honored to be a part of such a powerful project.“
With this groundbreaking song, Dex aims to inspire and empower humans like himself to never give up dreaming and to live life as it was intended to be lived, freely and fearlessly. Dex adds, "I’m not looking to change the entire world just yet, but if I can be a positive and encouraging influence and bring hope to just a few folks then I feel like I’m fulfilling my purpose.
